What is colour paint protection film?

Colour PPF—also called coloured PPF or color-change paint protection film—is a protective film that changes a vehicle’s visible finish. Instead of choosing between a new appearance and a protective layer, you get both in one installation.

Construction varies by product. UPPF’s Color PPF and Terminax Chroma-X are examples of colour films listed at 8 mil thick. Each series offers its own finish, thickness and care requirements.

Choose the finish, not just the colour name.

A silver, black or purple film can look very different depending on its sheen. Gloss creates stronger reflections; satin softens them; matte gives a flatter appearance. Metallic and colour-shifting finishes introduce another variable as the light and viewing angle change.

Some effect films also interact with the paint underneath: STEK describes DYNOprism as producing different results depending on the base colour. Confirm whether the selected film conceals the original colour or adds an effect over it.

What does colour PPF protect against?

Colour PPF adds a sacrificial layer: the film takes surface exposure that would otherwise reach the paint. Depending on the product, features can include resistance to stone chips, staining and fine surface marks, along with a water-repelling topcoat.

Protection has limits. Film does not make a vehicle immune to damage, and it does not repair existing chips or defects underneath. It can still be cut, scuffed or damaged by an impact. Physical damage and ordinary wear are distinct from manufacturing defects covered by a material warranty.

What does self-healing actually mean?

Self-healing describes the ability of certain film surfaces to recover from light scratches or swirl marks under the appropriate conditions. It does not mean a deep cut, missing material or damaged paint will grow back. STEK describes heat-assisted recovery for light scratches in its top-coated PPF. Recovery behaviour depends on the film; ask us before attempting heat or abrasive treatments.

Define the coverage before comparing quotes.

A colour change should be planned around what you want to see when the car is parked, driven and opened. Door jambs are not included in the standard exterior colour-change quote. They are quoted separately at an additional charge for both vinyl wraps and colour PPF. If you want the colour change to extend into the door jambs, include that request when asking for your quote.

Before booking, ask which panels and openings are included, where the original colour may remain visible and how any contrasting accents will be treated. We review edges, trim and panel openings with you when planning the installation.

At Black Label, full-vehicle and selected-piece colour PPF options are available. The appropriate scope depends on the vehicle, selected film and intended result.

What affects the cost of colour PPF in Richmond?

The useful comparison is a quote for the same vehicle, film and coverage—not simply the lowest headline price.

Your quote depends on the chosen material, vehicle size and shape, preparation, existing film, disassembly requirements and the panels or details you want included. A roof or accent project is a different scope from a complete exterior colour change. Door jamb coverage is an additional charge, whether you choose vinyl or colour PPF.

Craftsmanship and material warranties.

Black Label’s two-year craftsmanship warranty is separate from the manufacturer’s material warranty. Material coverage applies to specified product defects, with exclusions for impact damage and ordinary wear.
